You think movie writers don’t hack opera, think again. Just tonight coming from the set of “Ben Tumbling” in Marikina of the most shy and youngish maverick Director Joven Tan we almost ran late catching up our breaths yet (headed by the self-imposed PR of CCP Dennis Adobas with Saksi Editor Art Tapalla and award-winning documentarist Boy Villasanta)  to watch first off, the latest and much anticipated foray of the enfant terrible of Phil. theater Anton Juan’s staging of “Madame Butterfly” at CCP’s main theater.
Adding to our excitement was that the lead rolers were imports, soprano Mako Nishimoto as Madame Butterfly is Japanese and tenor Dante Alcala as B.F. Pinkerton is Mexican. Why are we running out of local talents to reprise Puccini’s opera?
Let’s not jump  the gun yet on MusicArtes, Inc. who is behind the collosal production.
I’ve lived in Italy (elsewhere in Milan, Rome and the Vatican) for almost five years (sorry to write in) and know what opera is. As in knowing one when you see and hear one.  La Scala of Milan is a stone’s throw from Duomo where OFW’s gravitate during their off hours usually on Sundays and Thursdays.
If you work your ass off in that Christian City that  pays a lot and with no one back home waiting for remittances buying a ticket or two for an opera at La Scala or for that matter in Rome is not hard on the conscience, da vero (true).
With that let me just do some bytes for my impressions on the opera at hand.  “Madame Butterfly” is an exalting triumph of direction vis-à-vis ensemble performance of world class quality  from everyone in the cast (including the movers) and music of The Phil. Philharmonic Orchestra through the combined genius of the eminent conductor from Singapore  Lim Yau and musical direction from  our very own Dr. Francisco F. Feliciano. Bravo!
I repeat Director Anton Juan’s re-working of the opera’s concept and staging is fresh, lyrical, unsullied as it is unprecedented and its post-colonial underpinnings hit hard to one who is not blasé yet to the horrors  of American imperialism in the Far East.
Dante Alcala’s voice as the ambiguous  Pinkerton  is heartrending and haunting, while  Mako Nishimoto’s all- too exhilarating voice as Cio-Cho San is hard to shake off even after I took my shower  upon reaching home, see?
Nishimoto is so luminous in and out and moves like a gazelle in an uncharted terrain unmindful of an invader. Her singing is rousing and spotless if there is such thing that she unconsciously and slightly eclipses perhaps Alcala not a few times with the  incandescence of her voice and movements. Brava Mako!
Camille Lopez Molina’s  Suzuki  and Andrew Fernando’ Sharpless are unbeatable in my book. The country’s ultimate pride they are. From my timepiece, “Madame Butterfly” in its gala night got a three-minute standing ovation from an aroused audience.
You have up to tonight June 23, 2012 to catch up to believe what am I raving about. 8pm at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

MS. CORY QUIRINO’S OBLIQUE, STYLISH BARBS AT STELLA MARQUEZ-ARANETA’S BINIBINING PILIPINAS

By GEORGE VAIL KABRISTANTE
PMPC (Phil. Movie Press Club)
From my blog Manila Showbiz and Lifestyle farmed out in different versions to Pilipino Mirror, Pssst!, Remate Tonight Online, Columnists Monitoring Update, etc.

The Miss World Philippines 2012 gala night co-hosted by TV5 held last night June 19 at Dusit Hotel, Makati had a slight controversial opening speech coming no less  from the CEO of said pageant Ms. Cory Quirino who looked luminous in deep and trailing red gown.
From my own reading, Ms. Quirino was right in saying that it is only Miss World Philippines that raises millions of pesos for a charity. Ms. Quirino challenges everyone in the chic gala, asking “Is there one such pageant, tell me.”
That’s point one from Ms. Quirino. Short of saying not Binibining Pilipinas of Stella Marquez-Araneta, not Miss Earth perhaps, etc. Only Miss World has that advocacy. You will believe in her stylish, yet oblique barbs at Binibining Pilipinas hahaha! I told you that’s from my own reading only. Not from Ms. Quirino’s.
And point two such being the case, Ms. Quirino rightfully claims that Miss World Philippines pageant is one venture in which the the beautiful faces of women are showcased with a purpose and not as  commodity perhaps, not to showcase beauty as its own excuse for being.  Naaah!
It must have a purpose. Do you get the drift?
Does Ms. Quirino mean that the rest of the  beauty pageants in the country has lesser purpose than the beauties of  Miss World’s? Read in-between the lines and that’s it.
Miss World seems to me and to Ms. Qurino the beauty pageant with a purpose to raise millions of pesos for charity. It’s one beauty pageant to end all other beauty pageants. Ambitious, daring and controversial? Yes.
My fearless forecast to win the Miss World Philippines 2012 title this early is contestant no. 1 Kay D. Wigand, that is assuming  she is a brainer more than contestant no. 2 Vanessa Claudine M. Ammann who is also my favorite  choice for the top title. Either the two of them to win the 2012 crown, I would be more than happy.
Vanessa  by the way won the title Miss La Laguna World of the famous couple Laguna Gov. George “ER” Ejercito and Pagsanjan  Mayor Maita Ejercito. Together, the beautiful couple handed the Ph.100,000 cash prize  to  Vanessa. Quite a sum if you ask me. We will see more of Vanessa in most of the events to promote tourism activities in Laguna, the premier tourism capital of the country if you still don’t know.
But consider also that there are dark horses in the direction like   April Love Jordan who won Best In Fashion Runway (technically placing her in the top 12 finalists), that smart looker from Bacolod City Daphne Tanya Molenat, the girl from Romblon Fer Mary Baliquig who was incandescent in her most relaxed projection, and contestant no. 22 Queneerich A. Rehman who won four titles,  namely Miss Phil. Prudential, Miss World Traveler, Miss Talent (sharing it with  contestant no. 19),  and Miss Photogenic. See?
How lucky she is? But will she make it to Miss World Phil. 2012. Find it out on the Coronation Night which will be aired live from the Manila Hotel Tent on Sunday, June 24 at   8:00 pm on TV5.
The gala night also had the society circle of Ms. Cory Quirino. I spotted my society friends the twosome Annette Sia and Manette Agbayani, event maven Geena Zablan, society writers Resty Vergara, Joy Fong, Donnie Ramirez, etc.
New Yorker balikbayan-designer  and good friend Albert Figueras who I have not seen in a long time  surprised me with stunning Kaye Michelle Agnes (contestant no. 20) from Sorsogon who he outfitted in dramatic black and white fetching dress. I would not be surprised if Albert’s morena beauty would make it to the top 12 as well.
In all, the gala night true to the shared aspirations of TV5 and Miss World Philippines highlighted to the barest essentials in terms of showcasing the said event to make the Filipina a force to reckon with in international pageants and Filipino communities abroad as well.

YOGO SINGH PAKAKAININ NG ALIKABOK ANG KANYANG MGA KASABAYANG CHILD ACTORS

YOGO SINGH PAKAKAININ NG ALIKABOK ANG KANYANG MGA KASABAYANG CHILD ACTORS

By GEORGE VAIL KABRISTANTE
PMPC (Phil. Movie Press Club)
From my blog “Manila Showbiz & Lifestyle” and farmed out in different versions to Pilipino Mirror, Remate Tonight, Pssst, CMT Update, Opinyon, etc.

Nung una naming napanood si Yogo Singh sa teleserye ng ABS-CBN na “Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo’’ bilang young Gerald Anderson I swore to myself na the young kid would go places. Point one, he is not just a cute and handsome child actor pero alam mo na thru his body movements  sobrang napaka-intuitive actor si Yogo as in spontaneous kung umarte.
Kinonfirm ito sa akin ng aming good friend Director Maryo Delos Reyes who discovered and gave Yogo his  first breaks and exposures.
Not Yogo.
Lalo kaming humanga sa kanya for the same reason.
Movie Press Club) Star Awards for Movies sa pelikulang “My Neigbor’s Wife” bilang anak nila Carla Abellana at Jake Cuenca.
So there was enough reason why only lately Yogo’s Mom decided to celebrate her only son’s 10th birthday at Max Chicken House, Sct, Tuazon in which I tagged my only grandson Noah Ezekiel C. Enero  all of four years old who is himself a self-confessed look-alike of Coco Martin. Kaya meron silang commonality bilang self-confessed fans and look-alikes of Coco, di ba naman?
Our most heartfelt birthday  greetings to Yogo and his Mom and hope for more blessings in the form of  TV and movie assignments  to come for both of them.

JOEY DE LEON, EDU MANZANO & ARNELL IGNACIO SANIB-PWERSA BILANG GAME SHOW HOSTS

By GEORGE VAIL KABRISTANTE
PMPC (Phil. Movie Press Club)

From the blog, “ Manila Showbiz & Lifestyle” farmed out to Pilipino Mirror, www.pmpcstarnews.com.ph website,Remate Online, Opinyon, CMT (Columnist Monitoring Team) Update,  Pssst, Saksi, etc.

In a packet interview of the three equally wacky hosts Joey de Leon, Edu Manzano and Arnell Ignacio of TV5’s newest game show “Game ‘N Go” (to premiere on June 17, Sun., 12:00 NN)  with the entertainment press at Mario’s Restaurant, Morato coinciding with Father’s Day celebration, ang tatlong kalog had their field day gamely answering in a no-holds- barred manner all sane and insane questions at hand over top-of-the line exquisite  entrée that Mario resto is most known for, thank you.
Of course, responsible gay and single father si Arnell behind the scene.
Napailing si Joey at sabi,  “Come to think oo nga ‘noh siguro magaling lang akong magtago, joke. Hindi, actually siguro una my hands are full of things to do in particular on the creative side. Aside from my TV hosting,  I write a lot like you. All through the years na-maintain ko ‘yung 13 syllables style of writing sa column ko sa Phil. Star. Ang patakaran ko kasi sa career ko ay: “Trabaho, Ipon, Travel, Enjoy and Share your blessings.”
So no time for scandals. Besides, stable ang family ni Joey with Aileen Macapagal as his better half for the longest time to three children who are all now professionals and are based in the States, London at sa ‘Pinas.
Some trivia on Joey’s life: Ang Lolo niya ay ang First Mayor ng Malolos, Bulacan sa time pa ni Emilio Aguinaldo.
It explains why kasama rin sa nasabing “Game ‘N  Go” show ang wacky veteran movie actress and TV host/ comedienne Gelli De Belen at Shalani Soledad now gamely on her own after her much ballyhooed separation from Willie Revillame’s show.
Na-taken aback din si Edu “Doods” Manzano ‘nung tahasan naming tinanong siya kung what were the lessons in life that he learned pagkatapos ng dalawang artista (Vilma Santos & Maricel Soriano) sa kanyang buhay. Kidding aside to go back to your question,  palagi kong sinasabi, there is a lesson learned always from past experience that makes us a better person, and better  father as well at the end of the day. There is a ‘lesson a day’ always talaga for us.”
I will take him for whatever he is.”
Does he approve of son Luis Manzano’s plan to  get into politics? His answer is a big “no.” “ Gagamitin lang siya and I warned him about it. I told him there is no such thing as quality time sa politics because public service is clearly quantity time. It is either you give up your showbiz career or  concentrate on public service. You cannot have them both. I hope he will take it from there, I mean his final decision if and when,” sabi pa ni Edu.
Finally, someone asked the three “What are their chances as hosts of ‘Game ‘N Go’?” On the serious side Edu noted na among other factors, mas nakakaangat di hamak ang kanilang show dahil kakaiba ang  format at segments nito, ‘ika nga alternative programming concept and show nila. Kukuryentehin ba naman ang mga contestants hahaha! Bago ito ha, only on TV5. Saan ka pa?

Parehong naka-50 Million plus  sa box-office gross
PAPA PIOLO  KASING-ASIM PA RIN KAY COCO
MARTIN

From my most recent ringside viewings of the back-to-back guestings  sa King of Talk Boy Abunda’s number one “The Buzz” ng tandem nila Piolo Pascual and Angelica Panganiban for  “ With Every Breath You Take” and Coco Martin with Angeline Quinto for “Born To Love You,” I recall having ambushed Piolo unabashedly with such speculation kung may kapalit na nga ba siya in the person of the youthful Coco Martin.
Unfazed, Piolo breezed through it all saying, “In all humility, I’ve been there done that. Ang focus ko ngayon is to challenge myself na everytime gagawa ako ng project it must be something different na well-thought of talaga coz I hate to be boxed and stereotyped. Sino ba ang hindi tumatanda?  Fact of life naman ‘yan na we can never hold on forever to roles for younger characters. Kumbaga, pana-panahon lang ‘yan. Time talaga ngayon ni Coco Martin so all-out ako to support him in any way I can. Basta sa akin at my age I go for mature and very challenging roles.”
Papano nga naman siya hindi maging in-demand and most sought-after yet gayung  back- to -back pa naman sila ni Coco Martin sa pagpo-promote na kani-kanilang pelikula at pati na sa pataasan ng rating ng kani-kanilang  teleserye  sa ABS-CBN?
Hindi ba  risky proposition ang “With Every Breath You Take”  compared to Coco’s  “ Born To Love You” which has the newest mass-based singing sensation Angeline Quinto ?” I pressed the button harder on Papa P.
“Coco with Angeline Quinto together is such a big advantage,” sagot ni Piolo. “But mine with Angelica is a bit different in that rom-com ito highlighting her double-barreled sense of humor na may mass-based following na rin,” dagdag pa ni Piolo.
Star Cinema’s Ad Prom Roxy Liquigan has revealed that the official box-office gross of its  previously released movie "Every Breath You Take" raked in a total of P50.2-Million on its three weeks of showing as confirmed by the website Box Office Mojo that  “ Every Breath You Take”  earned an estimated P25,517,397 on its first five days in theaters. Meaning, the rest of the showing days ay tubong lugaw na ito in the language of monster hit movies kaya naka-P50 Million plus ito sa first three pa weeks lang of showing.
Well said. Naman.
On its first 5-day gross still from the report of Ad Prom Roxy Lequigan    “Born to Love You”  earned P29.7 million at the box office.
As of June 5, 2012 the highest  grossing Pinoy movies ayon sa Mojo ( not necessarily   in that order  dahil showing pa up to now ang “Born To Love You”)   ay ang mga sumusunod, “UnOfficially Yours,”  “Moron 5 and the Crying Lady,” “Corazon Ang Unang Aswang,” “Every Breath U Take,”  “ The Mommy Returns,”  “Born To Love You,”  “ A Mother’s Story,”  “My Cactus Heart,”  My Kontrabida Girl,” and  “The Witness.”

Gov.

Read between the lines na lang. Define “tirahan” and “tahanan.”

Pero fair is fair at iwasan natin siyempre ang maging bias and we just have to be objective in choosing the most potential bet dahil the winner brings the name of the country in the international community abroad.”

At kahanay pa namin ang ‘The Avengers.’

P-noy for good governance, ang “Presidential Lingkod Ng Bayan Award.”

From Q.C. hatid-sundo ang mga press people going  to Manila Hotel and back.

Sa sit- down lunch napakasarap as in fine dining talaga  the entrée is enough for you to salivate reading them as follows: Seasonal Greens with Celery Tomato and Laguna Cheese with Coconut Vinegar Dressing, Corn Chowder with Smoked Chicken, Pan Fried Salmon with Soy Butter Sauce, Risotto Cake with Asian Flavors Green Vegetables, Japanese Cheese Cake with Pineapple Compote, and Macapuno Ice Cream. Coffee or tea to wash down the exquisite meal. Talbog!

In any case, the main event will be aired from Manila Hotel Tent on June 24, 8:30 pm on TV5.

By GEORGE VAIL KABRISTANTE
PMPC (Phil. Movie Press Club)
Also published in Remate Tonight Online, Pilipino Mirror, Saksi, etc.

In today’s presscon held at Annabelle’s Restaurant Morato, Q.C. over yummy lunch ( I salivated over the pudding) the said launch was presented by TV5’s  famed initiators namely Percy Intalan, Director Mac Alejandre, and Wilma Galvante.
Offhand, at the Q&A portion I hazard a joking comment directed to Wilma Galvante to the effect na “eh, di magkikita na naman kayo ni Annabelle (Rama)” to which sagot niya, with a small smile, “friends na kami, di ba?” Oo nga sana friends forever sila this time around  hahaha!
Kidding aside, the Artista Academy will give away a combined total of 20 Million Pesos in the biggest and most intensive artista search ever mounted on Philippine Television: ARTISTA ACADEMY.
It is not an exaggeration to say na this is the reality search to end all reality searches in this country. Talbog!
Here’s the detail: TV5 calls on young showbiz aspirants aged 16-21 to come to the  grand one-day auditions for ARTISTA ACADEMY, which will be held this June 19 at the SMART Araneta Coliseum starting at 2 pm.
Artista Academy offers a whopping 10 million peso grand prize and, of course, the promise of the glamorous artista life.

HELEN GAMBOA-SOTTO LAUNCHED MANANG’S CHICKEN AT VISAYAS AVE.,Q.C.

HELEN GAMBOA-SOTTO LAUNCHED MANANG’S CHICKEN

AT  VISAYAS AVE.,Q.C.

Urban legend had it that the beloved cook-mayordoma affectionately called Manang  used to  cook and serve sweet soy garlic chicken with enormous passion on the  dining table of her master’s family and their visiting friends. They never had enough of  Manang’s matchless way of doing chicken  since then -- ang bagong  fried chicken ng Pinoy!

Now it can be told that the phenomenal rise of Manang’s Chicken signature dish in the local community has played a huge part in securing a niche all its own, thus re- defining Filipinos love for chicken and  fast food.

The mushrooming  of Manang’s Chicken branches  in Metro Manila  soon became viral.  It found its way to the blogosphere, whetting the appetite of the customers for that  “Pinoy kick” sweet flavor that intensifies satisfaction as one munches on every piece of it to the last bite  where  deep frying is a delicate method among the discriminating foodies.
President and CEO of  Giabella Foods Corporation Mrs. Jill Gerodias- Borja, in hindsight knew that their chicken tasted extremely delicious and special from the rest  available  in fast food  chain.  To Mrs. Borja the business enterprise has been a breeze and is growing almost unbelievably fast due to  the  large increase in demands and following.

Inspired from another favorite family recipe, Manang’s Chicken offers yet choices of deep fried Garlic Liempo, Sesame Beef Stew to Crispy Chicken Sandwich, Fried Pancit and Cheezy Spaghetti.  It also has delectable  Manang’s Fish Fillet, an Asian twist with subtle hints of ginger and mushroom with variations of  secret soy garlic.

For those who want to have an alternative to chicken another Filipino dish, a bagnet rice version goes well with the concept of  Manang's Chicken. Natural and fresh fried potato chips take the sidelights along with coleslaw and macaroni salad.  A twist on a classic dessert with a taste of heaven inside, the Velvet Sundae made of moist velvety cake and fudge topped by vanilla ice cream was lately launched at another branch of Manang’s Chicken, Morato, Q.C.

Last June 5, 5:00 pm marked another timely occasion  for the most recent addition of another branch of Manang’s Chicken  at  Wilcon City Center, along  Visayas Ave., Q.C. with distinguished guests from the  business sector and public officials including top celebrities in attendance.
Manang’s Chicken has several branches  located at AIC Gold Tower, Garnet Road, Ortigas Center, Pasig City; G/F One Burgundy Plaza, Katipunan;  SM Megamall;  SM North Edsa; Glorietta Food Choices ; One Archers, Taft Ave. Manila;  Unit 2 & 3,Tomas Morato, Q. C. ; Presidents Ave., BF Homes Parañaque.
Manang’s hasn't abandoned its weekend market roots. The business still has a stall in Mercato Centrale, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig as well as in Midnight Mercato, the Legazpi Sunday Market, and Soderno @ Molito, Molito Mall, Alabang.
Manang’s Chicken  is  100 % Filipino- owned company. It  is  operated by Giabella Foods Corporation.  It is part of the MMG Group of Companies  which has been in the business for the past 35 years. To learn more about Manang's, visit:www.manangschicken.com.
