The most-awaited post-Valentine concert of the year is happening this Sunday, February 17 at 10 P.M. at Zirkoh Tomas Morato. A WONDERFour AFFAIR is topbilled by four of the best performers in the country namely Comic Diva Gladys Guevarra, Voice of Asia Prima Diva Billy, the Youngest Concert Heartthrob Michael Pangilinan and Rockoustic Heartthrob Sam Milby. They will showcase some of the best songs in a two-hour musical event produced and directed by journalist Jobert Sucaldito for Front Desk Entertainment Production. Performing as front acts are MM and MJ Magno and rapper Pio.

Gladys is noted for being so funny yet a genius as a singer/performer. Her Chuchay character is a must-see. Michael Pangilinan, who landed at the Top 20 finalists of last year's X-Factor Philippines who has joined GMA 7's Walang Tulugan and Party Pilipinas, is always a delight to everyone. He's so loved by the world. Prima Diva Billy's voice has always been a threat to other female singers. She's damn good! And of course, everyone missed Sam Milby - it's been a while since we last saw him perform onstage.

Ang mga sumusunod na talata ay sagot ko sa ka-facebook ko na si Jaime Garchitorena on the much-ballyhooed interview ni Ricky Lo kay Anne Hathaway who happens to be  a nominee for her searing performance as Best Supporting Actress for Les Miserables sa coming Oscars. In hindsight she might just bag it.

Jaime by the way used to be a singer and actor (oh he can still be one with his drop-dead looks)  and isa ako sa mga earlier directors niya sa Music Museum in his early career as singer before Viva Films got him for the movies. A blue-blooded Atenean, si Jaime has a fan following in his FB and isa na ako riyan, hence this answer to him when he took objectively to task colleague Ricky Lo for that controversial interview with Anne Hathaway.

I must confess that somehow I have made this in part due to my selective perception of things on behalf of my good friend Ricky Lo, as follows:

RICKY LO 

Hi Jaime (Garchitorena),  your implied treatise/theory of acting in relation to Ricky Lo’s interview with Anne Hathaway I’d like to think is just one of them since Stanislavski’s theory/practice of acting morphed into the so-called Method the world over, the Philippines included.

Ricky Lo’s interview with Hathaway referencing to her privileged position in relation to her drop dead performance in Le Mis has  to do with  the notion that one’s status/experience (or worse trauma) in life also makes for a more/less sensitive acting range/depth. Honestly, I don’t have a problem with that nor it should be an issue.

  Simplistic as it may appear but it does somehow, if not more. Makes me think back to one of Hollywood’s acting guru(s)    (must be Richard Gere?) who thought that “poverty” is one “acting root”  (Gere’s term )  from which one can draw a meaningful, organic performance.  And that’s for  Gere’s.

Ironically, the enigma of acting styles does not exactly yield to any one particular theory as you would imply in your ruthless, or is it monolithic idea of crushing Ricky Lo’s question to Hathaway as non sequitur/ out of place?  I don’t think so. For me, the premise of  Ricky’s question clearly implies yet another  “school of acting” in that direction I labored above which I think is  valid to assert.

As we would privately joke among friends in the biz, there is a Vangie Labalan  school of acting, Lolita Rodriguez school of acting, Susan Roces school of acting, Sharon Cuneta school of acting, Christopher de Leon school of acting,  Eddie Garcia school of acting, Fernando Poe , Jr. school of acting,   Lucita Soriano  school of acting, Charito Solis school of acting, Cherie Pie Picache school of acting, Angie Fero school of acting, Jaclyn Jose school of acting, Nora Aunor school of acting, Vilma Santos school of acting, etc. etc.

Oh, yes diversity is beauty, see?

COMING FULL CIRCLE WITH DIREK EMMANUEL PALO'S "A MOMENT IN TIME"

Don’t get confused by the name of Director Emmanuel Q. Palo and/or Manny Q. Palo. Iisang tao lang iyon.  Vicariously through his past works kilala namin siya bilang mainstream screenwriter, assistant director hanggang sa siya’y pumaimbulog sa larangan ng telebisyon on the same capacities mostly as director/scriptwriter for ABS-CBN’s top-rated teleseryes and reality shows as well.

      To give you an idea naging First Asst.Director si Direk Manny sa “Bulaklak Ng Maynila,”  “Sidhi” ni La Aunor, etc.  aside from doing screenplays   on the side.

      

Director Emmanuel Q. (for Quindo) has been around ‘ika nga. His latest ouevre “A Moment In Time” with the hottest loveteam of the hour Coco Martin and Julia Montes is a certified box-office and a monster hit at that sa first day pa lamang nito.

Which brings me to write-in my habitual ringside view of the loveteam at their last guesting at “The Buzz” last Sunday with the King Of Talk Boy Abunda who ingenuously  pinned down Julia Montes to admitting that Coco Martin   has the “9” chance of getting to her heart  in the scale of 1 to 10 which made Boy to almost gamely cut-off saying, “Well the interview is over…” Such patented wit of Boy A.

JULIA MONTES & COCO MARTIN

When it rains, it pours indeed. “A Moment In Time” is a testimony to Director Palo’s coming full circle bilang mainstream box-office movie director as well as a testimony to Coco Martin and Julia Montes as successful box-office loveteam to beat yet. Samantalang pinataub naman ni Coco Martin ang mga kasabayan niya sa primetime TV ratings bilang “Juan Dela Cruz.”

KING OF TALK BOY ABUNDA

      Director Manny Palo can be as kilig in his material tulad ng “A Moment In Time” and can be as serious as his past & critically-acclaimed Cinemalaya entry  “Sta. Nina” last year  with Coco Martin bilang bida  at prodyuser na rin.  Nasundan naman ito ng isa pang politically-relevant film na entry ni Direk Manny this year for Cinemalaya billed  “David F,” a period movie about the Afro-American solider who sided with the Filipinos during the war.

It's a deeply moving 3-stories-in-one film about Afro-American blacks sa panulat ng kasamahan namin at award-winning  na si Liza Magtoto ng Writers Bloc (if you allow a write-in), a group of established and  emerging playwrights that regularly meets every other Sunday mentored by the multi-awarded as in multi-talented PETA stalwart Rody Vera sa bahay (pro bono pa ha?)  ng equally multi- award-winning musical director (including  PMPC Star Awards too boot) na si  Vince De Jesus of PETA.

Being a looker kung di mo siya kilala Director Emmanuel Q. Palo in his recent press briefs at ABS-CBN’s Dolphy’s Theater could have passed for as actor himself habang nakahilera siya sa kanyang mga lead stars breezily parrying the Q & A portion which included the brilliant Gabby Concepcion and Cherie Gil no less.

Direk Manny is highly grateful for the monstrous success of “A Moment In Time” which is his first outing into  mainstream moviemaking. Saan ka pa? Kabog sila!

ROCCO NACINO & RODJUN CRUZ IN STEAMY GAY COMIC LOVE SCENES

Sa nakaraang induction  of officers ng PMPC (Phil. Movie Press Club) kung saan nahalal on his second term si Fernan De Guzman, naglitanya ang “Re-invention Queen of Movie Writing”  na si Roel Villacorta about the positive direction ng indie films at the present time sa harap ng inducting guest of honor no less than Sen. Jinggoy Estrada.

      Hopeful din si Sen. Jinggoy na sana nga coz in his own word nag- “comatose,” if not “dead” ( our own word hahaha!) na ang mainstream movie industry. Kailangan ang milagro to make it live once more. If at all.

      Which brings us to an “indie”  merienda launch (konti lang kasi kami) ng isa pang  gay indie film  billed “I Love You Pare Ko,” the most wholesome ever sabi ni Direk Buboy Tan compared sa mga nagawa niyang films ever.  Na siya namang promo blitz ng katotong si William Reyes who was the eventologist at hand topbilled by the Star Struck (Batch 5) almnus Rocco Nacino whose “Ang Sayaw Ng Dalawang Paa” won recognitions sa mga award-giving bodies like PMPC Star Awards for Movies, URIAN, Pasado and Golden Screen Awards.

For the first time ang kapatid ni Rayver Cruz na si Rodjun Cruz ay bida rin dito bilang isang closet gay na best friend naman ni Rocco. So there, can we expect laplapan or dambahan, if not hubaran scenes between these two straight guys onscreen sa selected SM mall cinemas? Watch na lang kayo
ng “I Love You Pare Ko” starting Feb. 6.

Tikom ang bibig ni Rodjun nung tinanong siya kung may relasyon nga ba ang ex ng kanyang kuya na si Cristine kay Derek Ramsay. Sabi lang ni Rodjun matagal nang naka-move on ang kuya niya and in fact meron ngang gagawin sina Cristine at Rayver na teleserye billed  “Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin.” Promotion sabi ko na nga ba?

      What surprised me was at the presidential table  was the handsome producer behind the project named Riqui Cardema na spittin’ image ng kinababaliwang si Sir Chief ng “Be Careful With My Heart” ng ABS-CBN  who could very well pass for the role of a  young father. Headhunters take note, this Cardema. I know one when I see one.

      I asked Riqui bakit gay themed film ang una niyang venture? Marami siyang  sinabi like it is his way of advocating against “hate crimes”  the world over, etc. In short  “I Love You Pare Ko ” is an advocacy film, short of saying it is a pro-gay film in the midst RH Bill and hysterical propaganda of the bigots and fundamentalists in the Catholic industry against same sex marriage and all.

Rara avis itong si Riqui Cardema who is nowhere near the gay spectrum. Naaah! Kailangan bang gay ka to advocate for the LGBT community? Naaah pa rin.

      On deeper probing Riqui just came home to see to the promo of his maiden venture from San Francisco, USA where he is a full-time paramedical practitioner. Very much a family man as well over there.

      On deeper probing, nalaman namin na si Riqui pala ay by heart is a blue-blooded artist and is a professional photographer and  in fact he has lots of story materials culled from his spine-tingling experience from working in  hospitals abroad.

      Hindi ako magtataka kung sa pagbalik ni Riqui muli sa ‘Pinas ay isa na siyang director at scriptwriter ng sariling niyang pelikula na possibly ay horror genre. Why not?

The local cinema  is a vast area to explore for the many talented with new blood in them to help resuscitate the “comatose” mainstream movie industry according to Sen. Jinggoy Estrada. Meanwhile, the comedy “I Love You Pare Ko” is for your consideration.

    

G.E.B SUPERCLUB INTO THE TSUNAMI VICTORY OF PMPC (PHIL. MOVIE PRESS CLUB) PREXY FERNAN DE GUZMAN aka MISS F.

Yes, that longish title says it all.

G.E.B Superclub at Morato, Quezon City graciously and in high style yummy food and drinks, etc. at that hosted our "miting de avance" on the eve of the recent campaign for the re-election of colleague, line-producer of the recent indie film version of NOLI ME TANGERE (which I directed for Dean Joe Rivera of Holy Rosary Colleges Foundation) Fernan De Guzman also popularly known in the movie industry as Miss F.

        Could not thank enough G.E.B for the favor, and yes also to our beloved and well-known bar manager Genesis of the world of single bars of Metro Manila who was the livewire behind it all.

At the last minute, we were able to wangle yet to our side the vote of the editor of newspaper Pilipino Mirror Evelyn Diao demoralizing yet the competing party no end.

        Parenthetical, Miss F. was my Art Director when I directed my " anti- film" according to Director Lav Diaz (hindi digital, film talaga, ha?) "Uod Sa Laman" starred by Criselda Volks, Alan Paule, Angie Ferro, Ronnie Lazaro, Ray Ventura, Pen Medina, etc., which up till now continues to get shown on PBO of Viva Film but that is not my story for now.

        The gathering, or "plotting" was to make sure to party members and all how to appropriate the strategy of the Russian "gestapo" game which we have imposed on all of us for the projected "tsunami" victory of Miss F.

        We thanked all the past presidents who supported the candidacy of Miss F. especially Joe Barrameda who supported Miss F up to the induction ceremony providing the ways and means to do it in style.

        The rest is history, everything was victory.

        All the enemies were bludgeoned and erased (all of them) figuratively from the face of the earth. Tsunami. Not one from the enemy camp survived to make it to the solid lineup of Miss F., see?

        Shortly after, we had our induction of officers at the upscale Choi Restaurant, Libis before Sen. Jinggoy Estrada which I kinda hosted single-handedly. Outcoming and most supportive ever of  Miss F’s candidacy PMPC prexy Roldan Castro handed down his crown to Miss F. in his most insouciant way.       

        To prove that showbiz is such a small world, before the induction over mouth-watering lauriat, we reminisced on the good, old times together with Sen. Jinggoy in his salad days so to speak.

        Familiar to Sen. Jinggoy were the names of Manay Ethel, Ernie Pecho, Letty Celi, Erlinda Rapadas, etc. Well that included me even reminding the Senator that I first crossed paths with him when he was yet pursuing his Economic course at UP Diliman. 

        Good old times, yes.

        In any case, read  the dossier of G.E.B Super Club and why it is the party place to go now at Morato hub. So there!

DIRECTOR LAWRENCE FAJARDO, ANOTHER ASWANG GIANT FILMMAKER FROM NEGROS

Director Lawrence Anthony Fajardo

Ang una kong encounter kay Direktor Lawrence Anthony Fajardo ay via his indie film Amok na ne-review namin noon para sa PMPC Star Awards for Movies, meaning ka-award-award nga ang pelikulang ito na incidentally ay nakakuha pa  ng 11 nominations for this year’s Gawad Urian including the top prize at the Detective Fest in Moscow last April.

        Nasundan ito ng isa pang indie film niya na Posas  sa Cinemalaya Filmfest kung saan nanalo pa ito as Best Film para kay Direk Lawrence sa so-called Director’s Showcase. Big deal if you ask me.

        The third time around was via his latest caper The Strangers na siguradong maging ka-kumpetisyon ito sa isa pang horror genre ng Regal na Shake Rattle and Roll 14: The Invasion sa Metro Manila Filmfest come Dec. 25.

Enchong Dee

        I bumped into this unassuming director/masscom graduate from De La Salle  Bacolod  for the first time sa bookstore ng Dolce Latte, Q.C. and found out na isa pala siya sa mga dating art directors ni Direk Peque Gallaga (Cinema One Originals Lifetime Achievement Awardee 2012)  from Negros. Think film directors from Negros  mentored by Gallaga, namely  Lorrie Reyes,  Eric Matti who in return mentored Richard Somes who just finished his critically-acclaimed and monumental film Supremo with Alfred Vargas in the lead including a cameo role (with dialogue no less)  for one of our entertainment columnists here in PM who goes by the screen name of Zyruz Imperial (marming salamat raw Direk Richard!).

        Out of my inquiry into his resume, nasabi ni Direk Lawrence na nagkasama na pala kami sa isang indie film na ginawa namin noon together with another Cinemalaya award-winning director  na si Ron Bryant kung saan I took the lead role (matuk?) as character in the short story (made into digital film) of novelist Bienvenido Santos playing opposite a homegrown talent (of Angie Ferro and of the theatre company under the National Artist for Theater’s stable Cecile Guidote Alvarez’s Balintataw Film & Theater Arts) turned film actress now you know who Marife Necesito (Mammoth, Graceland, Asawa Ni Meyor, etc.).

 I remember, being a digital techie himself Direk Lawrence was behind the camera, lighting, recording and all   in that project of ours. Not one for reminiscing, not too long ago yet dumbo!

        Na-introdyus din niya ako sa kanyang charming and animated wife who comes from the Bautista  clan of showbiz  na si Krisma Maclang, a Business graduate from Meriam who does the business side for  Direk Lawrence. Call it perfect coupling.

        Naturally, Director Lawrence waxes over his recent oeuvre The Strangers  na tungkol skeletons ng pamilya at sa kambal na sina Julia Montes at Enrique Gil bilang anak nila Johnny Revilla at Cherry Pie Picache at ng kanilang lolo na si Jaime Fabregas.

        Sa kamay ng isang another authentic aswang filmmaker preceded by their mentor/ Director Peque Gallaga/ Lorrie Reyes and  followed by Direk Richard Somes,  ang The Strangers ay isa pang pelikula na magbibigay kasiyahan at aliw sa mga manonood na mahihilig sa mga nakakapanindig-balahibong kwento galing sa kanayunan at kayamanan ng kwentong bayan sa syudad ng Bacolod, Negros Occidental.

        And this makes Director Lawrence Anthony Fajardo another film giant from Bacolod City in-progress I bet you.
