For his 30th PMPC (Phil.Movie Press Club) “Dekada” award
for notable score of works in ten year’s
time, I had to meet up with the breed so-called of indie filmmaker to emerge
in a long while Jerrold Tarog whose first serious film “Confessional” shot in Cebu that
sort of installed him an enviable niche
made me think he is child to the
proverbial Queen of the South, if
Lapu-Lapu’s genus or something ho-hum.

No,
the film prodigy whose surname Tarog is one vowel scant ( if you add “o” at
the end) to make
for a phallic, sexist sounding
thing for you know what is add or minus
as endemic as the haciendas of his birthright Canlubang, snaking
kilometers away to rousing UP Rural High
and UP Los Banos where he routinely spent years of his early academic life.

Coming
on with but few words belying the body English of an enfant terrible from across the table at Megamall’s Coffee Bean (his suggestion),
the fulsome at times randomly cautious conversationalist is in ways as absorbing as we self -disclosed
and part probed into each other’s psyche (damn this happens on first meetings)
as vagaries pressing in back of our minds kept us trifle impervious, unpatronizing to the
bistro’s delight; oh let this one
though make up for missing out on what
could have been a heady coffee social if
only we had time at our disposal.

Could it be youthful angst, shopworn soul-searching
itch that made him run-off with a peculiar degree in composition from UP’s

In
some sense ironic that what the rest of the
aforementioned veteran awardees plodded in a decade or so, Director
Tarog got his almost in fast track fashion taking off with his patina
“Confessional,” his unique
way of looking at things
filmic to “Sana Dati, ” another charming oeuvre yet to
his most recent credit.

Good
that I was able to make him come to the awards night because Director Tarog was
pressed for “Heneral Luna,” his otherwise fresh
gaze at the famed tactician of the Phil. Revolution whose brilliant
career in the battlefields like Bonifacio was snuffed out during Aguinaldo’s
dispensation who succumbed to and sided with the opportunistic American
warriors well, says our Ph. History 101.

Tarog
one of the very few prophetic auteur directors in the biz thinks it’s high time
we blotted out the great divide between indie & mainstream filmmaking, even
disclosing ways to market indie products.

By
his own initiative he helped raise his ROI
for his own “Sana Dati” shown at Aura cinema, the Fort above the
profitable margins into which the social
media helped keep in mind the vision of indie filmmakers spiritedly in a
territory of their own vis-à-vis mainstream.

We
wanted to treat our nominees, winners & presenters to a VIP, exclusive
“party-after” like they do it in the Oscars down Solaire’s chic Eclipse Bar for
photo ops and invigorating getting –to- know -you more chitchat perhaps, but no
way I could accost Director Tarog to the
party place even tagging along other indie presenters-winners led by Theme Song
Best Singer for an indie film Zyruz
Imperial who incidentally was on call (talk audition) for his “Heneral Luna” shoot.

I
understood why the Director had to beg
off saying he has to run off late to the
same pressing matters at hand, the filmbio project yet of Gen. Antonio Luna.

By the way, Director Tarog’s
multidisciplinary works in both indie and mainstream include “Carpool,” “Confessional,” “Astig,”
“Mangatyanan” (The Blood Trail), “Shake,
Rattle & Roll 12: Punerarya,” “Aswang,” “Shake, Rattle & Roll 13:
Parola,” “Agusan Marsh Diaries,” & his most recent “Sana Dati.” And
counting yet to add on to his portfolio of solid works.
